History:  Washburn Bog Pond, once also called Grassy Pond, is in West Harwich near Littlefield Pond.  The pond was named for Francis H. Washburn who purchased lands from several owners around the pond in the late 1800s to start a cranberry bog.  The cranberry bog is no longer actively managed, but cranberry plants continue to grow throughout the pond.  The shoreline is undeveloped woodlands with many pine trees.  The pond has a certified vernal pool.  It is connected to an old stream, known as “Smelt Creek,” to the south.
