History:  Smalls Pond is located on the border between Harwich and Brewster and is connected to the much larger Long Pond to its south.  The shoreline is settled with private residences.  Public access is via Cahoon Beach, which has parking and a small boat launch.  The passageway between Long Pond and Smalls Pond was once actively maintained by the Town of Harwich to enable the movement of herring, but the system is now being left to naturalize with sediment build-up.  The taking of herring at the passageway is prohibited.  The combination of woodlands and scrubland along the shore makes it popular as a birdwatching hotspot.
