History:  Seymour Pond is natural kettle pond as well as a Massachusetts Great Pond.  Transparency is between 6 and 13 feet. The bottom is composed of sand and rubble, and aquatic vegetation is scarce. The pond’s two-mile shoreline is lightly wooded.  Development is limited to a few houses, cranberry bogs and a town beach. The pond is fed by groundwater, drains to Hinckleys Pond and is part of the Herring River Headwaters.

Seymour Pond derives its name from John Seymour, who lived in the area. “Near it on the hill, many years since, lived an Englishman by the name of John Seymour, who was by occupation a tanner, and from whom the pond received its name” (History of Barnstable County, Massachusetts, Page: 826).  The pond is also known locally as Bangs Pond, named after John D. Bangs, who lived in the area shortly after John Seymour.

Bathymetry of Seymour Pond is available from Massachusetts Fisheries and Wildlife
