History: Robbins Pond was named after Robert or James of the Robbins family, who date to the early 1700s in Harwich. The pond is in the watershed of the Herring River and was used to flood cranberry bogs for more than 100 years. The Great Swamp Cranberry Bogs, also known as the Chatham Cranberry Bogs, just north of the pond, were actively cultivated from the 1830s-1840s until the town of Harwich purchased the bogs in 2002. The bogs cover about 10 acres of a 60-acre site with also include a well house and water pumps. Protection of the Robbins Pond shoreline is a focus for the Harwich Conservation Trust to preserve habitat for songbirds, raptors, Eastern box turtles, foxes and other local wildlife.
