History:  The pond commonly known as “Grass Pond” is also referred to as “Crooked Pond” and “Woonkepit” by early settlers and Native Americans respectively.  The pond is bordered by thick vegetation and marshes that limit views and access.  Grass Pond is the source of Cold Brook, which runs through former cranberry bogs in the Robert F. Smith Cold Brook Preserve, and into Saquatucket Harbor. This area is the subject of a recent ecological restoration project.  The 28-acre-pond has been an important source of water for local Harwich cranberry bogs.  The muddy bottom of the pond makes it ideal for turtles and the vegetation, water and lack of public access contribute to abundant wildlife.
