History:  Cahoon Pond, located in both Harwich and Brewster, was named after Harwich resident Captain Alvin Cahoon (1812-1883), a fisherman who became a cranberry farmer.  Captain Cahoon is also known for a 500-foot canal he built between nearby Seymour and Hinckleys Ponds to help supply water to surrounding cranberry bogs. Captain Cahoon’s son Alvin Cahoon Jr. (1834-1882) is famous for building an ice boat, the “Flying Dragon,” for sailing back and forth to work the fishing banks. His son was the well-known painter Charles D. Cahoon (1861-1951).  Cahoon Pond is a popular fishing spot known for large-mouth bass, chain pickerel and channel catfish.
