History: Sand Lake is a small, shallow densely vegetated kettle pond that was dredged to its current shape when the Great Sand Lakes neighborhood was developed in the 1950s.  The pond features a central peninsula surrounded by shallow water.  The shoreline is populated with private homes.  Public access is via a walking trail off Rainbow Way.  A variety of birds, including ducks, geese, egret, herons, hawks, owls, and many types of songbirds inhabit the area, along with fish, turtles, muskrat, otters, coyote and other wildlife.
