History: A Massachusetts Great Pond, John Josephs is a deep funnel-shaped kettle hole that connects to Bucks Pond in high-water years. Surrounded by private houses, it has two beaches owned and maintained by the Great Sand Lakes Association. Known historically as Briggs Pond, for Daniel Briggs who settled near the pond in the 1800s, Oker’s Pond for Joanna Oker, a poor woman who lived near the pond in the early 1700s and was driven out of town, and sometimes “the pond near Benjamin Philips,” it was named for John Joseph in the late 1800s. The pond is known for bass fishing, kayaking and swimming. Rare Plymouth Gentian grows around the pond, which is also known for osprey, egret and hawk sightings.
