History: Hinckleys Pond has had several names, including Herring Pond and Pleasant Lake, and was named after Thomas Hinckley, a farmer who lived on the east side of the pond. The pond is a 171-acre natural kettle pond and a Massachusetts Great Pond.  With an average depth of 12 feet and a maximum depth of 28 feet, transparency is poor to fair, extending to roughly 6 feet. The bottom is composed of sand, gravel, and some rubble and there is scattered aquatic vegetation. The pond is fed by groundwater and drains into the Herring River. The 1.7 miles of shoreline are developed with residential homes, cranberry bogs, and a beach.  Harwich Conservation Trust is currently engaged in an eco-restoration project involving two of the cranberry bogs adjacent to the pond.
